Why did General Grant believe in using "continuous offense" during the Civil War?

He chose the continous attack because He didn't want any recuperation on the side of the rebel, and so that they couldn't get any rest from the Attack.
Even though Grant's tactic was proven to be really effective in driving the enemy out of their own territory, this tactic also resulted in heavy casualties in Grant's military squad/
