Mass hysteria. People were afraid of the unexplainable and unfortunate events going on in their daily lives, and they needed someone to blame for it so they could feel safe again, and like they were solving their problems. So they put the blame on individuals in their society who they frowned upon,we’re afraid of,or who they could benefit from once they were illuminated.
